Quesnel Interconnector & Bridge Replacement Project
The Project
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is investigating options to relieve industrial and commercial traffic that currently travels through the downtown core of Quesnel, BC, in response to growing concerns of air quality and heavy vehicle incidents. The proposed solution is to construct a four-lane north-south interconnector at the northern edge of the downtown City center, parallel to the existing CN Rail line, and construct a new four-lane rail bridge over the railway and a new four-lane bridge over the Quesnel River. The route being proposed would see the current bridges over the Quesnel River and the railway tracks replaced upstream of their present locations, and the four-lane strip of highway joining the existing highway around the Super Save gas station. The two new four-lane bridge structures would be built with no overhead structures and bike and pedestrian lanes, no cross streets on the road section, and easy access/egress from the downtown built into the two intersections at the north and south ends of the interconnector. The project would also see the removal of the existing rail bridge and Quesnel River bridge, as well as Utilities upgrades, a new rail crossing, and new signalized traffic intersections.
